Background of the Study

Relapse in psychiatric patients poses a significant challenge to mental healthcare systems worldwide. Psychoeducation, a structured intervention involving the provision of information and coping strategies, has been shown to improve treatment adherence and reduce relapse rates (WHO, 2024). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a pivotal role in delivering psychoeducation to patients and their families.

At Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, high relapse rates among psychiatric patients have been a recurrent issue, often attributed to poor treatment adherence, lack of support systems, and inadequate patient education. Implementing nurse-led psychoeducation programs has the potential to enhance patients’ understanding of their conditions, improve medication compliance, and foster better coping mechanisms (Abubakar & Ahmed, 2023). This study examines the effectiveness of such interventions in reducing relapse rates.

Statement of the Problem

Relapse in psychiatric patients results in frequent hospital readmissions, increased healthcare costs, and diminished quality of life for patients. Despite advancements in psychiatric care, relapse rates remain high at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe. Nurses’ involvement in psychoeducation is often limited due to time constraints and insufficient training.

Previous research has highlighted the effectiveness of psychoeducation in reducing relapse, but its implementation by nurses in Nigeria remains underexplored. Understanding the impact of nurse-led psychoeducation could inform strategies to reduce relapse rates among psychiatric patients in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of nurse-led psychoeducation on relapse rates among psychiatric patients at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.

2. To evaluate patients’ knowledge and medication adherence after receiving psychoeducation.

3. To identify barriers to the implementation of psychoeducation by nurses.

Research Questions

1. How does nurse-led psychoeducation affect relapse rates among psychiatric patients?

2. What is the level of patients’ knowledge and medication adherence after psychoeducation?

3. What barriers hinder the implementation of psychoeducation by nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led psychoeducation significantly reduces relapse rates among psychiatric patients.

2. Psychoeducation improves patients’ knowledge and medication adherence.

3. Identified barriers negatively affect the implementation of psychoeducation by nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric patients at Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, and evaluates the effectiveness of nurse-led psychoeducation. Limitations include the potential for recall bias among patients and the exclusion of psychoeducation delivered by other healthcare professionals.

• Psychoeducation: An intervention that involves educating patients and families about mental health conditions and coping strategies.

• Relapse: The recurrence of symptoms of a mental health disorder after a period of improvement.

• Medication Adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed treatment regimens.
